Backup Power Systems
Inverters & Batteries
How do Backup Power Systems work?
Today efficient backup power systems consists of two major components, an inverter and a single lithium solar battery or set of lithium solar batteries. Batteries usually have a potential difference of either 12, 24 or 48 volts DC. Eskom delivers power to our homes at a voltage of 230 volts AC which is incompatible with DC batteries. The voltage potential is stepped down to 12, 24 or 48 volts by the inverter and the lithium solar batteries are charged during normal Eskom operation.
In the event of the system experiencing a loss of power due to an Eskom fault or load shedding, the inverter automatically switches over. Power is supplied to your electrical appliances in your home or business with energy stored in the battery. When Eskom power is restored, the inverter switches back automatically to again charge the lithium solar batteries to their full capacity.
